01  ·  Why there is a screen on it

Most connected dash cams this size have no screen at all.

Everything happens on your phone, including aiming the thing at the windshield. The H2 has a 2.99-inch screen, and it does two jobs — one of which is not a screen job at all.

Privacy

Slide it shut and the cabin lens is covered

A Hall sensor reads where the display is sitting, so the cover is a hardware state — not a setting in an app that someone could switch back from somewhere else. Slide it open when you want the cabin recorded again. That is what the clip is doing — open, the screen carries both pictures; shut, the cabin half is simply gone.

Useful if you drive rideshare, or if you lend the car out. The camera also has a microphone, and audio recording is switched off from the factory — the Down button turns it on or off.

Stick it on the glass, look at the screen, tilt until the road sits where you want it. No pairing first, no app open in one hand and a camera in the other, no peeling the adhesive pad off to try again.

Press OK on the same screen to switch between the road view and the cabin view at any time.

Where that claim comes from — our check, and its date

In September 2026 we went through the connected dash cams that come up alongside the H2 — the ones with cellular built in, the ones where cellular is a module you buy separately, and the ones that only do local Wi-Fi. On the built-in-cellular side, the pattern was consistent: no display on the camera at all. Several say so in the product title.

Cameras in that group do other things well, and some of them cost less than the H2. What we did not find was one with a screen you could use to aim it — or a screen that doubles as the cover for the cabin lens.

Slide the display shut and it physically covers the cabin lens — a Hall sensor reads where the panel is sitting, so it is the hardware that knows, not an app setting. Slide it open and the cabin is recorded again.

Two ways to power it. Both kits are in the box.

The parking watch needs constant power, and that is where most dash cams lose people — the kit is sold separately and it means opening the fuse box. Both of ours are in the box.

It wakes your phone at 11:40 p.m., before you would have found the dent in the morning.

The camera has its own 4G, so the alert leaves the car without your phone anywhere near it. All of it needs an active plan and cellular coverage.

Two different 30 days, and they are not the same thing. What people ask before they buy

Does the built-in 4G need a SIM card or its own data plan?

No SIM card to buy or insert, and no carrier account to open: the 4G is built in. No SIM does not mean no data cost, though. The data comes with the plan you buy in the SmartSF App: 1 GB a month on the $9.99 Basic plan, 5 GB on Standard, unlimited on Premium, with a 2 GB top-up for $9.99. Recording to the card needs no plan; live view, alerts, live GPS in the app and voice need an active plan and cellular coverage where the car is.

What still works if I never pay for a plan?

It stays a working dash cam as long as you own it: it loops road and cabin footage onto the 64 GB card, locks a clip on impact, keeps recording while parked on constant power, and lets you pull clips over Wi-Fi 6 at the car. A plan, with cellular coverage, adds live view, alerts, voice and live GPS, plus cloud backup on Standard and Premium. A new H2 has 30 days of Standard to claim in the app once it is paired; it does not start on its own.

Does it record when the car is parked and the engine is off?

Yes, when it has constant power and the parking watch is set to AOV or Standby. Recording to the card needs no plan; alerts to your phone while parked do. A cigarette-lighter socket that goes dead with the ignition cannot run it. The hardwire kit in the box can, and so can the OBD-II adapter that comes free with this batch while supplies last; on some cars the OBD-II port also switches off with the ignition, so then use the hardwire kit. AOV keeps recording at a low frame rate. Standby sleeps until an impact wakes it and then records, so the moments before the impact are not on the card. The third setting, PowerOff, records nothing. Either watch is set for up to 24 hours, and low-voltage protection ends it sooner if battery voltage drops below the threshold.

Can it reach my phone when I’m nowhere near the car?

Yes, over its own 4G rather than your phone’s hotspot or your home Wi-Fi, so an alert can leave the car with your phone nowhere near it. It needs four things: the camera set up once (install the SmartSF App, listed as AIDOVID, pair over Bluetooth, press OK on the camera); constant power while parked, as in the answer above, not a lighter socket that cuts out with the engine; an active plan; and cellular coverage where the car is parked, which an underground garage may not have. The parked watch lasts up to 24 hours at a time, less if low-voltage protection cuts in, and the alerts stop when it does. We do not promise a delivery time.
